Discrimination at work is illegal in Germany. And the deadline is short. The German General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) protects you against discrimination based on ethnic origin, gender, religion or belief, disability, age, or sexual identity — in hiring, promotion, pay, and dismissal. Harassment, including sexual harassment and systematic bullying („Mobbing“), falls under the same protection.
The critical deadline
Compensation claims under the AGG must be asserted in writing within two months of the discriminatory act. This is one of the shortest deadlines in German employment law — internationals lose valid claims to it every week.
What you can claim
Damages for material loss and compensation for the discrimination itself; in dismissal cases, discrimination arguments can also strengthen your settlement position considerably.
